Elizabeth Welcome Station

Telling the Stories that Shape America

For more than a century, the historic Elizabeth Train Station stood at the center of movement in this city—carrying people, ideas, and opportunity into and out of Elizabeth. Long before highways and airports, this station connected residents to the rest of New Jersey, New York, and the nation beyond.

As Elizabeth approaches its 250th anniversary, this landmark is once again becoming a place of connection.

The Elizabeth Train Station is being reimagined as the GoElizabethNJ250 Elizabeth Welcome Station—a cultural home base where the city’s past, present, and future come together.

Elizabeth’s relationship with the railroad helped define its growth. From the early days of horse-drawn railcars and experimental steam locomotives to the height of industrial-era rail travel, this station was a crossroads of everyday life.

Workers passed through on their way to factories and offices. Families arrived to begin new chapters. Visitors encountered Elizabeth for the first time here. At its peak, tens of thousands of people traveled through Elizabeth each day, making the city one of New Jersey’s most important transportation hubs.

The station’s Romanesque Revival design—completed in 1893—reflected that importance. With its stone exterior, wide arches, and iconic clock tower, it was built not only to serve travelers, but to represent civic pride.

Today, it remains one of the few preserved railroad stations of its era in the region.

While trains no longer stop here, the purpose of the station endures.

Just as it once connected Elizabeth to the wider world, the station will now serve as a place where Elizabeth tells its own story—on its own terms. As the headquarters for GoElizabethNJ250, this space will welcome residents and visitors alike and serve as a starting point for exploring the city’s history, culture, and community life.

The headquarters will host rotating stories, cultural moments, and shared experiences that reflect Elizabeth’s diversity and its role in shaping New Jersey and the nation. It will be a place to gather, learn, reflect, and look forward—linking what has been with what is still unfolding.

Choosing the Elizabeth Train Station as the GoElizabethNJ250 Headquarters is intentional.

This is a building shaped by movement, by arrival, and by possibility. It witnessed Elizabeth’s transformation over generations and now stands ready to help tell that story anew—connecting personal histories with a broader American narrative.

As Elizabeth marks 250 years, the station becomes more than a preserved landmark. It becomes a living symbol of continuity, resilience, and shared identity.

Calling Local Artists, Performers & Makers

The GoElizabethNJ250 Elizabeth Welcome Station is being shaped as a living cultural space—one that celebrates the creativity, talent, and entrepreneurial spirit of Elizabeth.

As plans continue to come together, we’re inviting local artists, performers, cultural groups, and makers to share their interest in being part of what’s ahead. This may include performances, workshops, demonstrations, and locally made goods that help tell Elizabeth’s story.

Submitting interest is not a final booking or retail commitment—it’s a way to stay connected as programming and opportunities take shape.

We are interested in hearing from musicians, spoken-word artists, dancers, theater groups, cultural organizations, educators, and other creatives whose work connects to community, history, culture, or storytelling.

Selected programming will be designed to complement GoElizabethNJ250 initiatives and encourage engagement across the city, helping bring new audiences into Elizabeth while celebrating those who already call it home.

The GoElizabethNJ250 Elizabeth Welcome Station will also feature a curated retail component highlighting locally made goods that reflect Elizabeth’s identity, creativity, and heritage.

Artists and makers interested in contributing items—such as art, crafts, apparel, prints, books, or culturally significant goods—are encouraged to share information about their work for future consideration.

All retail offerings will be curated to align with the mission and storytelling goals of GoElizabethNJ250.
